A U.S. Army electrician has been arrested in Iran, the U.N. said Saturday.
The arrest comes after the United States arrested the head of Iran’s main electricity firm in January over allegations that he was defrauding the government.
The U.K.-based Al-Azhar University on Saturday released a statement saying it had arrested a U.Y. graduate electrician in Tehran, Iran’s semiofficial Fars news agency reported.
The statement did not elaborate.
Iran’s Ministry of Energy said the arrest took place on Saturday in the central city of Tabriz, where the Uyghur minority live.
Iran has long struggled to develop a reliable electric grid, with power lines and other infrastructure being cut off.
It also faces rising international sanctions, including a ban on foreign investments.
